What actually drives app cost
Four things move an app budget more than the feature list does, and only one of them tends to appear in a competitor’s estimate.
Scope, not features
Nobody can honestly price a feature in isolation, which is why this calculator uses scope weights rather than a price per checkbox. A leaderboard on top of an existing activity model is a week. The same leaderboard when nothing tracks activity yet is a month.
Design depth
The lever founders underestimate most. System-native components with your brand colors ship fast and look fine. A bespoke, animated interface is real design time before a single screen gets built, and it is genuinely what some products need.
Content production
Two hundred audio sessions, an exercise video library or a food database has a schedule and a cost of its own, and it sits outside the build price. Teams routinely budget for the player and not for the thing it plays.
The year after launch
Two OS releases a year will break something in an app that reads health data. Maintenance from $1,000/mo and QA from $799/mo are the difference between a live product and one that quietly stops working in month eight.

Exactly how this calculator works
The low end of the range is arithmetic, not opinion. It is the published floor price for the tier you picked, plus the published price of every add-on you selected. A one-platform MVP with two wearable integrations is $12,000 plus $7,000, so the range starts at $19,000. You can check every one of those numbers against the full price list.
The high end applies a scope model. Each feature and each scope choice carries a percentage weight shown next to it, the weights are summed, and the total is applied to the floor. Those weights are a model of how much a choice expands a build, not a price per feature, and we label them that way in the interface because any tool that puts a hard dollar figure on “add a leaderboard” is inventing it. The same leaderboard is a week on top of an existing activity model and a month when nothing tracks activity yet.
One rule fires automatically: if your feature and scope selections push an MVP past roughly a doubling of its floor, the calculator stops pricing it as an MVP and uses the full custom build floor of $25,000 instead, and tells you why. That is the honest answer to the most common estimating mistake in app projects, which is calling something a minimum viable product when it is the whole product.
The range deliberately never collapses below a 25% spread. A quote with two significant figures of confidence before anyone has scoped the work is a sales tactic, not an estimate. How can I make my fitness app cheaper?
Cut platforms before you cut quality: ship one platform first, or ship web first and skip store review entirely. Cut the content library, which is usually the most expensive thing on the list and the least visible in an estimate. Add wearable integrations one at a time based on what your users actually wear rather than all six up front.
